âNow I see why Peter would try to hide you,â said Mae. âI have to say, youâre a brave person to take a chance with a man like that.â
âHe was worth it,â Chloe said quietly. âPeter was the best kind of guy. I miss him terribly. I try not to think about it too much, or else I canât evenâ¦.â
âI know,â said Mae softly thinking about the loss of her husband. âI know.â After a moment, Mae asked, âIf you and Peter were trying to keep your relationship a secret, how did you happen to be at that huge downtown party with him and all the rest of those men? It sounds like you already knew they could be very dangerous.â
âYes, I knew,â Chloe said. âI was very worried when Peter said he was going to be there with those men. I tried to talk him out of going. I would have been very happy to spend a quiet New Yearâs Eve alone with him, at anyplace he wanted to go.â
She held the lap robe close, staring into space. âBut Peter said he had to go out with them sometimes or theyâd get suspicious about him and his family trying to leave the mob. He told me heâd make it up to me later, and he was only going with them because he had to.
Chloe shook her head. âNow, I know that sounds pretty suspicious, like he was meeting another woman there or something, but that just wasnât Peter. I decided if he had to go to that party, then Iâd go, too, and surprise him.â
âI see,â said Mae, nodding slightly.
Chloe looked at Mae and managed a little smile. âSure, I wanted to make sure nothing like that was going on, but really, it wasnât just that.â
The young woman closed her eyes again for a few seconds. âI wanted to see him. I missed him. I wanted to spend New Yearâs Eve with him because I thought we would be celebrating the year when everything would change and we could be together without the threat of his fatherâs mob associates hanging over us. I knew he might be a little upset if he saw me at the party, but I didnât see any harm in going. I guess I saw it as a form of hiding in plain sight.â
Mae said, âAs in ⦠Peterâs friends would hardly suspect you were his girlfriend if it looked to them like heâd just met you.â
âThatâs right. Loads of people were meeting and hooking up at the biggest New Yearâs Eve bash in town. I thought I could play it as being just one more girl he talked to at the party.â
âDid your friends know who he really was?â
âMy sorority sisters? Absolutely not. They didnât know anything about it. I never said a word to any of them about seeing Peter. Not ever.â
âWhat about Peterâs Russian friends? Did they know who you were?â
âNo, they didnât. Peter never talked to them about me, just like I never talked to anyone about him.
